1. National Study on Youth & Religion Workshop – This Friday
The National Study on Youth and Religion (NSYR) is a landmark six-year research project to research the shape and influence of religion and spirituality in the lives of American adolescents. This workshop will present on the results of this study and our rethinking of our cultural and institutional practices with regard to youth and religion. Youth ministers, pastors, DREs, teachers, and campus ministers will find this in-service foundational for ministering to today’s teens. Dr. Bob McCarty, Executive Director of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, will present the data and its implications on Friday, October 14, 2005, 9am-3pm, at Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton. Visit www.archdpdx.org/ym and click on the NSYR link or more info and the registration flyer. Door registrations will be accepted.
2. Archdiocesan Catechetical Conference – This Saturday
The annual Archdiocesan Catechetical Conference will take place this fall at Valley Catholic School in Beaverton on Oct 15. A focus of the conference will be the new National Directory for Catechesis. Workshop topics will include: Role of the Catechist; Adult Faith Formation; Evangelization; Youth; and more. English Keynote will be given by Dr. Bob McCarty, Executive Director of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry. Spanish keynote will be given by Leticia Salazar. Add the date to your calendar and look for more details in early fall. Registrations will be accepted at the door.
3. CYM Dialogue with Catholic High School Ministers
Parish Coordinators of Youth Ministry (CYMs) have been invited to the quarterly meeting of the Campus Ministers from all the Catholic High Schools in the archdiocese to share in a meal and discussion. Parish CYMs are invited to dialogue with Catholic High School Campus Ministers regarding opportunities and challenges for collaboration and support between parish youth ministry and Catholic High Schools. Join us on Monday, October 24, 11:30-2pm at La Salle High School in Milwaukie. Lunch is Pot Luck and there is no cost. If your youth ministry overlaps or serves any Catholic high school students, please help us respond to this generous invitation from our campus ministers. Please RSVP with Randy.
4. Archdiocesan Youth Encuentro Looking for Volunteers
The Archdiocesan Youth Encuentro (Encuentro is Spanish for “encounter”) is in need of four to eight adults (or mature youth leaders with an adult leader) to assist with the welcoming, hospitality and registration. Help is also welcome throughout the day. Understanding and speaking Spanish is a plus but not required. The Archdiocesan Youth Encuentro is October 22 at St. Mary Parish in Corvallis. Show solidarity and support for our Hispanic youth and young adults. Volunteers will meet at the parish at 8am. Volunteers can RSVP to Randy.
5. Archdiocesan Youth Rallies (ADYR)
Bring your youth to a day of fun, fellowship, prayer, and great keynote speakers at this fall’s Archdiocesan Youth Rallies (ADYR). Junior High Youth Rally (for 7th-8th graders) will be Sat, Nov 19, 2005 and Senior High Youth Rally (for 9th-12th graders) will be Sun, Nov 20, 2005. Each rally will be a stand-alone event from 11am-6pm. The location, Marist High School in Eugene, is centrally located and minutes off of Interstate 5. The per-person cost of the rally will only be $15 for youth and $5 for adults (an additional $10 late fee will be charged for registrations made after early bird deadline). Lunch will be INCLUDED in that price. Because the rally is a single day, you will be able to bring your group on the morning of the rally and get back home the same day at a reasonable hour. No lodging will be required. Group registration forms and promotional posters are available for download at www.archdpdx.org/ym.bi
6. Evangelization & Catechesis of Youth Workshop
How do we nurture faith growth in teens? How do you help teens develop their Catholic identify? Join us for Fostering the Faith Growth of Adolescents through Evangelization & Catechesis. This workshop, part of the Youth Ministry Studies Program, can be taken as a single workshop or as a component towards a certificate in Catholic Youth Ministry Studies. Group rates are available so you can bring your DRE, pastor, and volunteers. The two-day workshop is set for Dec 3-4 at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie. See the full schedule and class descriptions, including a downloadable flyer/registration at: http://www.archdpdx.org/ym/ymsp.htm. And don’t forget to mark the Jan 7-8 YMSP workshop on Pastoral Care of Youth on your calendar.
7. WYD in Parishes – Oct 23, 2005
Did you know that the American bishops call us to celebrate World Youth Day each year on the 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time? That’s coming up on Oct 23. In preparing for World Youth Day weekend, parishes and schools should look at the many possibilities that exist to showcase the gifts, needs, and hopes of young people. This can include educating the parish about youth ministry and the many gifts of the young people in your parish. See www.archdpdx.org/ym for more info.
8. Souper Bowl for Caring – Feb 5, 2006
Over 15 years ago, a
single prayer led a senior high youth group to a simple, yet powerful idea to
fight hunger and poverty in their community.
The Souper Bowl of Caring calls youth to action-individuals, youth groups, civic organizations and schools are making a difference in the lives of others through this simple movement of caring. The concept is simple—on Super Bowl Sunday, collect donations from your parish, then donate the money to the charity of YOUR choice. The Souper Bowl for Caring organization asks that you simply let them know (via their website) how much in donations you collected. Since 1993 over $28 million dollars has been donated by youth groups by way of the Souper Bowl for Caring. The Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry encourages parish youth ministries to get involved in this worthy project. Visit www.souperbowl.org to register and download your Souper Bowl of Caring kit.
9. Only five NET dates available
The National Evangelization Team has again been invited into the archdiocese for retreat ministry this spring. Parishes and schools who have used NET over the last few years have commended NET for their powerful witness and practical ministry. At this time, there are only five dates still available for 2006. Please consider NET when planning your spring youth retreat. For more info, visit http://www.archdpdx.org/ym/net.htm. For an online video produced by the US Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB), visit http://www.atlanticvideo.com/clients/ccom%20/ and scroll down to 11/05/2004.
Los Embajadores is an experiential service-learning opportunity that uses a proactive relationship based approach to affect a transformative service experience for high school and college age youth participants. Since 1988 Los Embajadores participants have been traveling to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico to work with and live among local communities. The program is grounded in service work, but moves beyond manual labor to provide a holistic experience. The work serves as a conduit for building relationship with the Mexican people, learning how to form a supportive and interdependent community, and gaining a firmer understanding of the social justice issues that underlie poverty. Contact Kathleen McGoey at 503-806-9575 or director@losembajadores.org for more information. Applications for this summer’s programs will be due soon.
