2. New Coordinator of Youth Ministry Orientation

All new Coordinators of Youth Ministry (CYMs) in the Archdiocese of Portland are invited to an orientation that will get you up-to-speed on the things you need to know in your ministry. Topics include child protection policies, travel policies, best practices, as well as support and resources from the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry. No cost, but pre-registration is required. Note that if a particular site does not get enough pre-registered participants, that orientation could be cancelled, so please pre-register. For the orientation dates and times, visit www.archdpdx.org/ym and click on the Orientation link.

3. Annual Youth Minister Gathering

Join us on Aug 30 at the Griffin Center for a day of prayer, networking, professional development, calendar planning, support & affirmation.

As in the past, we'll also feature our "bookstore" with hundreds of youth ministry resources at discounted prices from top youth ministry publishers including St. Mary's Press, Group Publishing, and the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry. We're pleased to announce that this year we'll also have resources for sale from Youth Specialties. Registration required. Please use form on YMG brochure. Don’t forget to bring your checkbook for purchasing resources or let us bill you or your parish.

4. National Study on Youth & Religion Workshop

The National Study on Youth and Religion (NSYR) is a landmark six-year research project to research the shape and influence of religion and spirituality in the lives of American adolescents. This workshop will present on the results of this study and our rethinking of our cultural and institutional practices with regard to youth and religion. Youth ministers, pastors, DREs, teachers, and campus ministers will find this in-service foundational for ministering to today’s teens. Dr. Bob McCarty, Executive Director of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, will present the data and its implications on Friday, October 14, 2005, 9am-3pm, at Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton. Visit www.archdpdx.org/ym and click on the NSYR link or more info and the registration flyer.

5. Creating Christian Leadership Communities Workshop

Would you like to build an effective ministry leadership structure that nourishes learning and leadership? Join us at a workshop entitled, “Creating Christian Leadership Communities for Youth Ministry and Religious Education.” The workshop will be offered twice this September—Sept 17 in Eugene and Sept 18 in Portland and led by Greg “Dobie” Moser, Executive Director of the Diocese of Cleveland’s Youth & Young Adult Ministry. Visit www.archdpdx.org/ym and click on the “Creating Christian Leadership Communities” link for more info and the registration flyer.

6. What are your favorite youth ministry e-newsletters?

Is there an email newsletter that you receive that helps you with your youth ministry? Great tips, handy hints, cutting-edge research? Is there an e-newsletter that you’ve wanted to share with others? Forward copies of your favorite youth ministry e-newsletters to mhorace@archdpdx.org and we’ll share results in a future YM Update. Be sure to include your name and parish and the reasons why you like that particular newsletter.

7. Join the mosaic tribute to John Paul II

A new website has been set up to collect photos of people who want to join in a tribute to the late John Paul II. The photos will be made into a mosaic collage that will hang in front of the Cologne cathedral during the International World Youth Day celebration in August. You do NOT need to attend WYD to join in the tribute. You just send a digital photo of yourself to the website and it places it in the mosaic. Better yet, the website will then send you a link showing you where YOUR picture is in the mosaic. Check out Michal Horace’s mug in the mosaic: http://snipurl.com/michal_wyd_mosaic (be patient while the site loads). Notice that in the lower right corner, there’s a picture of the final mosaic and a small square that gives you an idea where your picture is located on the mosaic. You can even zoom out to see how your image becomes just a speck on the mosaic. To join in the tribute, go to www.thank-you-jpii.net. Be sure to click on the English flag (unless you’re fluent in German) and follow the directions. The site says anyone can submit a photo, so pass the news onto your youth.

8. NCYC last call

Time is running out for parish groups to join us for the biennial National Catholic Youth Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Over 20,000 youth and their chaperones from across the USA will be present for fun, worship, and fellowship. If you can’t get a group of teens organized for the conference, consider coming yourself to see first-hand what NCYC is all about. You’ll gain a better understanding of the conference and have fun at the same time. For information on this archdiocesan trip, visit http://www.archdpdx.org/ym/ncyc05.htm.

9. Quo Vadis Days for young Catholic men

Quo Vadis Days (Quo Vadis is Latin for “Where are you going?”) is a 3-day camp for young Catholic men to learn more about the priesthood, to deepen their faith, and to better discern God’s call in their lives.  The Archdiocese of Portland’s QVD are Aug 5-8. Please encourage young men in your parish ages 12-21 to attend QVD. To learn more including registration info, visit www.qvdays.org.

10. Only six NET dates available

The National Evangelization Team has again been invited into the archdiocese for retreat ministry this spring. Parishes and schools who have used NET over the last few years have commended NET for their powerful witness and practical ministry. At this time, there are only six dates still available for 2006. Please consider NET when planning your spring youth retreat. For more info, visit http://www.archdpdx.org/ym/net.htm. For an online video produced by the US Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB), visit http://www.atlanticvideo.com/clients/ccom%20/  and scroll down to 11/05/2004.

11. Archdiocesan Catechetical Conference

The annual Archdiocesan Catechetical Conference will take place this fall at Valley Catholic School in Beaverton on Oct 15. A focus of the conference will be the new National Directory for Catechesis. Workshop topics will include: Role of the Catechist; Adult Faith Formation; Evangelization; Youth; and more. English Keynote will be given by Dr. Bob McCarty, Executive Director of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry. Spanish keynote will be given by Leticia Salazar. Add the date to your calendar and look for more details in early fall.

12. Prayer & Worship with Youth Workshop

How do I plan a prayer service for youth? How can I get my parish teens more interested and involved in liturgy? What prayer form is most effective with young people? Join us for Fostering the Faith Growth of Adolescents through Prayer & Worship. This workshop, part of the Youth Ministry Studies Program, can be taken as a single workshop or as a component towards a certificate in Catholic Youth Ministry Studies. Group rates are available so you can bring your DRE, pastor, and volunteers. The two-day workshop is set for Oct 1-2 at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie. See the full schedule and class descriptions, including a downloadable flyer/registration at: http://www.archdpdx.org/ym/ymsp.htm. And don’t forget to mark the Dec 3-4 YMSP workshop on Evangelization and Catechesis on your calendar.

13. Archdiocesan Youth Rallies (ADYR)

Bring your youth to a day of fun, fellowship, prayer, and great keynote speakers at this fall’s Archdiocesan Youth Rallies (ADYR). Junior High Youth Rally (for 6th-8th graders) will be Sat, Nov 19, 2005 and Senior High Youth Rally (for 9th-12th graders) will be Sun, Nov 20, 2005. Each rally will be a stand-alone event from 11am-6pm. We hope you will mark your calendars and plan on organizing your parish to attend. The location, Marist High School in Eugene, is centrally located and minutes off of Interstate 5. The per-person cost of the rally will only be $15 for youth and $5 for adults (an additional $10 late fee will be charged for registrations made after early bird deadline). Lunch will be INCLUDED in that price. Because the rally is a single day, you will be able to bring your group on the morning of the rally and get back home the same day at a reasonable hour. No lodging will be required. Look for more information about ADYR this fall at www.archdpdx.org/ym.

14. Youth Ministry Resource Manuals for 2005 in Stock

This year’s edition of the popular Youth Ministry Resource Manual produced by the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry is available. The Office of Youth Ministry has purchased a large quantity of these manuals and will sell them at cost ($15). Coordinators of Youth Ministry, DRE’s, and catechists from around the country rave about the catechetical sessions and planning information available in the manual. Many purchase the manual for the preparation material and tips for World Youth Day in Parishes (Oct 23, 2005), the National Catholic Youth Conference, and International World Youth Day. For more information on the 2005 manual, visit: http://snipurl.com/ymrm2005. You can buy the manuals through the youth ministry office or directly from NFYCM. Contact our office to purchase your copy—we’ll send you a manual, bill you and we’ll even pay for the shipping.
