1. Chapter 11 Reorganization

If you have not already, we encourage you to read Archbishop Vlazny’s letter at http://www.archdpdx.org/newsrel/bankruptcy-letter.html. Our hope is that there will be no change in the ministry services and programs provided by our office. Please keep Archbishop Vlazny and his advisors in your prayers.

2. New Coordinators of Youth Ministry to Gather

All new coordinators of youth ministry (CYM’s) to the archdiocese are invited to one of the three New CYM Orientations. Meet other new CYM’s as well as the archdiocesan staff. An overview of archdiocesan vision, policy, and procedures will also be presented. No cost, but registration is required by July 26. Orientations are: Aug 2, 9am-noon, Portland (Pastoral Center); Aug 2, 6:30pm-9pm, Eugene (site TBD); Aug 3, 6:30pm-9pm, Medford (site TBD). To register, email the archdiocese at youthministry@archdpdx.org.

3. Annual Youth Minster Gathering

The annual gathering of coordinators of youth ministry and youth ministers will take place on Aug 31 at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie, Oregon. Join us for a day of prayer, networking, professional development, calendar planning, resourcing, and affirmation. The cost is $20 and includes two meals. For $35 a night, overnight accommodations are available at the Griffin Center for those who arrive Monday night or not departing until Wed morning. For a brochure, email us at youthministry@archdpdx.org.

4. Young Adult Conference

The Archdiocesan Young Adult Conference (YAC) will take place at the beautiful Resort at the Mountain on Nov 5-7, 2004. Archbishop Vlazny will preside at our closing liturgy. This year’s conference will be focused on the decision making process of young adults in life-changing areas such as career, relationships, and faith. Discount lodging will be available. Registration material will be available in early August.

5. NET Retreat Dates Available

The National Evangelization Team (NET) has some open dates to lead your youth retreat during their annual visit to our archdiocese. Parish leaders that used NET last year commented on the power of the message and style of the NET retreat leaders. NET can lead a four-hour retreat, a weekend retreat, and everything in between. Many parish leaders also commented that the overnight home stays for the NET team members made a lasting impact on the families of the parish and became a secondary ministry to the parish. Download a flyer at www.archdpdx.org/ym. Contact the archdiocese for scheduling NET at youthministry@archdpdx.org.

6. Retreat Teams Looking for Members

Both the National Evangelization Team (NET) and the Retreat Evangelization and Conversion of Heart (REACH) are looking for new retreat team members between the ages of 18-30 and practicing their faith. If you know of a young adult passionate about their faith, please suggest one of these ministries. For info on NET, visit www.netusa.org. For info on REACH, visit http://pages.prodigy.net/reachym/.

7. YM 101 Training at Upcoming Youth Ministry Studies Program (YMSP)

So you’ve read Renewing the Vision and are wondering how to get things started. Principles of Youth Ministry, the upcoming YMSP course, will offer a broad overview and implementation of the US Bishop’s youth ministry document, Renewing the Vision. All coordinators of youth ministry, youth ministers, pastors, DRE’s and volunteers are invited to attend the two-day workshop on Aug 21-22, 2004 at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie, Oregon. Team rates are available. Visit www.archddpx.org/ym to download a flyer for the August class or a brochure for the YMSP.

8. National Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry

A national conference just for Catholic youth ministers? Over 2,000 volunteer and professional youth ministers are expected to attend this biennial conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Over two dozen youth ministers from our archdiocese attended the previous conference. For more info, visit www.nfcym.org.

10. ADYC Dates Set

Mark Feb 4-6, 2005 on your calendar for the annual Archdiocesan Youth Conference (ADYC). More info and registration material will be available early this fall.

11. International World Youth Day / National Catholic Youth Conference

Two faith-filled events in 2005 for appropriate ages…

The Archdiocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry is organizing a pilgrimage to the 2005 International World Youth Day (IWYD) in Cologne, Germany for young adults ages 18-30 (youth ages 16-17 will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will require the accompaniment of his/her parent or permanent legal guardian). Details of the archdiocesan pilgrimage will be available later this year. The trip is estimated to take place in mid-August 2005 and cost approximately $2500-3000 per person. (Archbishop Vlazny encourages all young adults of the archdiocese to attend IWYD via the archdiocesan pilgrimage; however, if a parish, vicariate, or other group presents compelling reasons for not participating in the archdiocesan pilgrimage, they may apply to the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for an exemption that could allow them to make their own IWYD arrangements. If an exemption is granted, age restrictions for trip will be same as for archdiocesan pilgrimage—see above—and arrangements must be in accordance with current archdiocesan fiscal and risk management policies and procedures.)

The Archdiocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry is also organizing a trip for high school-age students for the 2005 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) in Atlanta, Georgia, Oct 26-30, 2005. The archdiocese sent over 50 participants to the previous NCYC in Houston, Texas. Four archdiocesan teens had the chance of lifetime to dialogue with 40 bishops on the topic of social justice and six archdiocesan teens performed onstage in front of 25,000 NCYC participants. Details of the NCYC trip will available this fall
