2. Young Ministry Best Practices Workshops
There’s still time to register! Don’t miss this groundbreaking workshop! What if you could find out the secrets of successful youth ministry programs from around the country? What if you could glean the wisdom and knowledge of the country’s best Coordinators of Youth Ministry? What do successful parishes have in common? No time to do that kind of research? Not to worry—St. Mary’s Press and the Center for Ministry Development have already done it and have packaged it into a one day workshop coming your way. The “Best Practices” workshops are scheduled for April 30 at the Pastoral Center in Portland (8:30-3:30pm) and May 1 at St Paul-Eugene (8:30-3:30pm). You can register here or visit www.cmdnet.org/workshop. The registration fee includes a free copy of Effective Practices for Dynamic Youth Ministry (a $15 value).
3. International World Youth Day (IWYD) / National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC)
Two huge faith-filled events in 2005 for appropriate ages…
The Archdiocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry is organizing a pilgrimage to the 2005 International World Youth Day (IWYD) in Cologne, Germany for young adults ages 18-30 (youth ages 16-17 will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will require the accompaniment of his/her parent or permanent legal guardian). Details of the archdiocesan pilgrimage will not be available until later this year. The trip is estimated to take place in mid-August 2005 and cost approximately $2500-3000 per person. (Archbishop Vlazny encourages all young adults of the archdiocese to attend IWYD via the archdiocesan pilgrimage; however, if a parish, vicariate, or other group presents compelling reasons for not participating in the archdiocesan pilgrimage, they may apply to the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for an exemption that could allow them to make their own IWYD arrangements. If an exemption is granted, age restrictions for trip will be same as for archdiocesan pilgrimage—see above—and arrangements must be in accordance with current archdiocesan fiscal and risk management policies and procedures.)
The Archdiocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry is also organizing a trip for high school-age students for the 2005 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) in Atlanta, Georgia, Oct 26-30, 2005. The archdiocese sent over fifty participants to the previous NCYC in Houston, Texas. That included four archdiocesan teens that dialogued with 40 bishops on the topic of social justice and six archdiocesan teens that performed onstage in front of 25,000 NCYC participants. Details of the NCYC trip will available around Christmas.
For a pdf copy of the archdiocesan IWYD attendance policy, send your request to youthministry@archdpdx.org.
You deserve it! All Coordinators of Youth Ministry, Youth Ministers, and Catechetical Leaders are invited for 5½ hours to relax, reflect, and rest. Choose one of two dates & locations—May 26 in Portland (Griffin Center) or May 27 in Cottage Grove (Our Lady of Perpetual Help). Time is 9:30am-3:00pm for each day. There’s no cost, but you’re asked to bring a potluck salad or main dish for lunch. Beverages and desert will be provided by the Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education. RSVP by May 21 to ecarlson@archdpdx.org or 503-233-8304.
Are you or your youth ministry core team looking for some Youth Ministry 101 training? Principles of Youth Ministry is the ideal introduction to comprehensive youth ministry base on the US bishop’s document, Renewing the Vision. The dates have been finalized for our new cycle of Youth Ministry Studies Program (YMSP) courses. Participants can take one course or all eight. YMSP is a great way to further your ministry development while building up your ministry resource library. Discounted team rates are available. All YMSP classes are at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie, Oregon. The upcoming courses are: Principles of Youth Ministry—Aug 21-22, 2004; Practices of Youth Ministry— Oct 2-3, 2004; Foundations for Ministry Leadership— Jan 8-9, 2005 and; Skills for Christian Leadership—Mar 5-6, 2005.
6. Archdiocesan Young Adult Conference Returns for 2004
After taking a year off, the Archdiocesan Young Adult Conference will return this fall. This year’s conference, Nov 5-7, will take place at the beautiful Resort at the Mountains (www.theresort.com) in the western Highlands of Mt Hood, just an hour east of Portland. Young Adults in the late teens, twenties, and thirties are invited to this weekend conference (Friday evening through Sunday noon) that will conclude with a Closing Mass with Archbishop John Vlazny. Discount on-site lodging rates have been negotiated and include traditional deluxe hotel rooms as well as a limited number of suites, condos, and villas. Please spread the word to young adults in your parish community to save the weekend. Registration brochures will be available this summer.
We encourage you to attend Mission 2004, a Mass and celebration on Sunday, June 6 at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center. Archbishop Vlazny will preside at the Mass and will announce the archdiocese’s new pastoral plan. All are invited, especially families. Doors open at noon and the celebration begins at 1:30pm. All are invited to bring a picnic lunch and eat on the practice field near the Chiles Center. Volunteers are also needed (training will be provided). To volunteer, contact Anne Marie at amvandyke@archdpdx.org.
The Vocations Office of the Archdiocese of Portland is inviting young men ages 13-17 to a special three-day camp to pray, play, and explore God’s calling in their lives. Quo Vadis Days will be held June 14-17 at the Little River Christian Camp and staffed by priests and seminarians. Please consider personally inviting a young man you know to this event. Contact Fr. Kelly Vandehey, Archdiocesan Vocations Director, at 503-233-8368 or kvandehey@archdpdx.org for info or a brochure.
· The Institute for Peace and Justice has developed a special web page for diocesan and parish youth ministry leaders, highlighting their materials for ministry with young people. Their resources include justice and peace session materials, prayer services, and activities. Go to www.ipj-ppj.org and click on “Diocesan and Other Religious Leaders.”
· Paulist Media Works and Paulist Young Adult Ministries have put together an excellent website designed specifically for Catholic young adults at www.bustedhalo.com. Sections include spirituality, lifestyle, relationships, and Catholic identity.
· The National Study of Youth and Religion is a research project being conducted at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The purpose of the project is to research the shape and influence of religion and spirituality in the lives of American adolescents. You can see some of their latest research at www.youthandreligion.org.
