1. Happy Advent, Merry Christmas

On behalf of Randy, Michal, and Gabriela of the Archdiocesan Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry, we’d like to wish you a joy-filled Advent in joyous anticipation of the birth of the Christ. Have a Merry Christmas.  “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.”—Mt 3:3b

2. Archdiocesan Youth Conference (ADYC) & Video Contest

By now you should have received your registration material for the annual ADYC, set for Jan 30-Feb 1 at the Seaside Convention Center in Seaside. Remember that your Form R Parish Participant Rosters are due Dec 30. Copies of ADYC forms and additional information can be downloaded at www.archdpdx.org/ym. Be sure to make your housing reservations. We also encourage you to challenge your youth to create and submit a video for the ADYC video contest (old link). The video is to be based on the ADYC theme, “Jesus Revealed,” based on Luke 4:21-30. Your parish receives one free ADYC registration just for sending in a valid video entry.

3. Justice & Service YMSP Class

It’s not enough to just bring youth to a service project. Our youth need to be exposed to the rich Catholic social teachings. And our projects have to link our youth to people, not just busy work. But how? And why? Join us for our next Youth Ministry Studies Program (YMSP) class entitled “Fostering the Faith Growth of Adolescents through Justice & Service.” This two-day class has been highly praised as one of the most straightforward, concise training opportunities for ANYONE interested in Catholic social justice. The class is Jan 10-11, 2004 at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie, Oregon. Coincidentally, our instructor, Sean Lansing, is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Sean is a staff member of the Center for Ministry Development (CMD) and national coordinator for CMD’s popular “Young Neighbors in Action” program. All are welcome, whether you’re planning on taking all eight YMSP classes or just this one. Please register soon! The cost is $140 plus optional books for an individual. Group rates are available for 2, 3, or 4 students from the same parish. Email us at youthministry@archdpdx.org for more info or a registration form.

4. How to Train Youth & Parents on Safe Environment

You’ve been to the Archdiocesan Safe Environment Training. You’ve got some ideas on how to train your volunteers on Child Protection. But how do we train parents and young people on Safe Environment as required by the Bishop’s Child Protection Charter? Youth Ministers are invited to the January DRE Cluster Meetings throughout the archdiocese to discuss ideas for offering training for parents and youth within your religious education and youth ministry programs. Materials and sample lesson plans will be provided at the meeting. The meeting dates are: Southern Oregon Cluster – Jan 6, Our Lady of the Mountain, Ashland, 12:00 p.m.; Mid-Valley Cluster – January 13, St. Mary, Mt. Angel, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.; Eugene Cluster – Jan 20, St. Catherine of Siena, Veneta, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Portland  Metro Cluster – Jan 8, St. Henry, Gresham, 9:30 a.m.; Southern Coast Cluster - Jan 22, Holy Redeemer, North Bend  6-9p.m. For more info, contact Claire Woodruff in the Office of Religious Education at cwoodruff@archdpdx.org.

5. David Roth Concert March 19 at U of P

David Roth, internationally acclaimed folk singer, musician, and storyteller, will be performing at a free concert at the University of Portland’s Buckley Center Auditorium on March 19, 7:30pm. David’s music appeals to all ages, including youth and young adults. A free-will offering will be taken up at the concert, which is cosponsored by the Archdiocesan Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry and the University of Portland Campus Ministry. For more info on David Roth, visit www.davidrothmusic.com. For more info on the concert, contact paterson@up.edu or youthministry@archdpdx.org. Directions to U of P and a campus map available at www.up.edu (click on “About UP”, then “Maps”).

6. Youth Ministry & Parents Workshops

How can you get parents more involved in your youth ministry or catechetical ministry? How can we assist parents in their role as primary catechist in the lives of teens? Find out at one of the upcoming Youth Ministry & Parents: Secrets for a Successful Partnership workshops—Feb 12, Archdiocesan Pastoral Center-Portland, 9am-3pm; and Apr 24, St Alice-Springfield, 9am-3pm. The workshop is $25 per person if registered before Feb 5 and includes coffee and rolls and a reduced price for the book Youth Ministry and Parents: Secrets for a Successful Partnership.

7. Young Adult Leadership Development (YALD) Program

The great thing about young adult ministry is that young adults can coordinate much if it on their own with solid guidance and leadership. Looking for that shot in the arm to get your parish young adult ministry up and running? The Archdiocese of Portland has received a generous grant targeted specifically at Young Adult Ministry training. The result is a four course Young Adult Leadership Development program offered at substantially reduced fees. Parishes are invited to sign up a team of young adults to attend the four classes spread out throughout 2004. More information will be available in early January, but we urge you to start recruiting some core young adults now. The first class, Principles in Ministry with Young Adults, will be April 2-3 (Fri night, Sat day).

8. Youth Ministry Best Practices Workshop

What if you could find out the secrets of successful youth ministry programs from around the country? What if you could glean the wisdom and knowledge of the country’s best Coordinators of Youth Ministry? What do successful parishes have in common? No time to do that kind of research? Not to worry—St. Mary’s Press and the Center for Ministry Development have already done it and have packaged it into a one day workshop coming your way. The “Best Practices” workshops are scheduled for April 30 at the Pastoral Center in Portland (8:30-3:30pm) and May 1 at St Paul-Eugene (8:30-3:30pm). More details will come in the next snail mailing.

9. 2004 Youth Ministry Resource Manual “Living Justice, Proclaiming Peace” Now Available

The latest Youth Ministry Resource Manual is now available from the Archdiocesan Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry for $15. This year’s manual, entitled “Living Justice, Proclaiming Peace,” focuses on youth ministry activities on Catholic Social Justice. Ideas for celebrating the annual World Youth Day in Parishes (Oct 24, 2004) are again included. Contact the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry at youthministry@archdpdx.org to order your copy.

10. Liturgy Documents Vol. One Available at Deep Discount

The excellent resource, The Liturgy Documents, Volume One, published by Liturgical Training Publications (LTP) is available from the Archdiocesan Office of Worship for only $5 a book (plus $1 per book postage and handling). This is a 60% discount over the cover price. Why the discount? Since the publication of the new General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), the version of the GIRM in The Liturgy Documents, Volume One is out of date. The document on liturgical environment is also out of date, but the other ten documents in this book are current and you won’t find them anywhere this cheap. This book brings together several important liturgical documents including the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy and the Directory for Masses with Children into a single soft-cover volume. To order a copy, contact Gayle in the Office of Worship at 503-233-8315 or gwarden@archdpdx.org. Note that the Office of Worship has copies of the revised GIRM and the revised liturgical environment document for sale as well.

11. New Youth Retreat Center Focus Groups

The planning for a new Catholic Youth Retreat Center near Milwaukie is moving forward.  An architect and fundraising coordinator have been hired and the business plan is being finalized. In order to continue to move forward, they are looking for people who work with young people (in particular doing retreats) to attend a series of three focus groups in downtown Portland in order to give their insight into the building and designs of the ground. The meetings are being finalized, but will most likely be in January in the evening from 7-8:30pm. The architect and Board members will be present to listen to your thoughts and ideas. If you think you might be interested in participating in this process, please contact JULIA HOPKINS (Board Member) at 503-845-4279 or by email jhopkins@archdpdx.org and she will notify you when actual dates are finalized.

12. Jesse Manibusan/Ken Canedo Concert, Jan 8, Ascension-Portland

Jesse’s back in Portland for a free concert on Jan 8, 7pm, at Ascension parish in Portland (7507, SE Yamhill St, 503-256-3897). Ken Canedo will be joining him as they play some classics and some new material from their new album, Love Never Fails. All ages are invited, but Jesse is especially popular with teens. A free-will offering will be taken and CD’s, tapes, and music will be available for sale. Of course, Jesse will probably have some of his trademark “smiley face” t-shirts for sale as well!
