1. Online Survey – Give us your feedback on the Youth Ministry Updates

Many future Youth Ministry Updates will contain a poll or survey to help the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry determine how best to serve you. Your responses are confidential and the site will never ask for your email address. The poll/survey website will place a harmless “cookie” (a small text file) on your computer in order to allow respondents to return to incomplete polls/surveys and to limit respondents to only one survey. We appreciate your feedback.

This month’s poll asks for feedback on Youth Ministry Update email newsletter. Click here to take this month’s survey. (If the “Click here” link does not work, cut the following link and paste it in your browser: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=34165288294)

2. Randy Kollars to be a guest on KBVM Catholic Radio

Randy Kollars, director of the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry, will be an in-studio guest of KBVM Catholic radio (88.3 FM in metro Portland and Salem) on Thursday, Oct 9 from 10am-Noon. Randy will be speaking about youth ministry and helping KBVM with their Fall Sharathon pledge drive. Listen in and please consider donating to KBVM on behalf of the youth ministry community.

Young Catholic Adults ages 18-40, married or single, are invited to a retreat entitled “Journey of Desire” led by Fr. Bill Holtzinger and Carolyn Trumble. This faith-centered retreat—celebrated with testimonies, small groups, music, reconciliation, and fellowship—will encourage young adults’ journey with God. The retreat will be held Nov 7-9, 2003 at the Canby Grove Conference Center. The cost is $75 per person with bunkhouse lodging, $105 per person with cabin lodging (3 person occupancy), and $115 per person with cabin lodging (2 person occupancy). Cost includes lodging, retreat costs and four meals. For more information and a registration form, contact Carolyn Trumble at ctrumble@stpiusx-pdx.org or 503-644-5264, x122.

6. WYD in Parishes

Remember that throughout the United States, World Youth Day (WYD) will be celebrated on Sunday Oct 26. We encourage you to be in solidarity with the rest of the nation and advocate for your young people that weekend. If you cannot celebrate your young people at Masses on Oct 26, please consider celebrating WYD on a future Sunday. For last minute resources including prewritten blessings for young people and parents, see http://www.nfcym.org/v3/pubs/ymrm2003.html.

7. Justice & Service class

How do we instill a justice & service consciousness and spirituality in our teenagers? How do we create integrated, action-learning justice & service catechetical models for teens? Join us for “Fostering the Faith Growth of Adolescents through Justice & Service” on Jan 10-11 at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie. This workshop can be taken as itself or as one of the eight classes of the Youth Ministry Studies Program (YMSP) and is open to all adults. If your parish has someone who is responsible for justice & service in your parish, please let them know about this valuable training. You can request a pdf flyer for this workshop at youthministry@archdpdx.org.

8. YAM Training Day

Offered twice in our archdiocese, “Making Your Parish More Young Adult Responsive” is a workshop for pastoral leaders such as Young Adult Ministers, Coordinators of Youth Ministry, priests, DRE’s, Pastoral Associates, etc. Joan Weber, a national expert in Catholic Young Adult Ministry will present the workshop that will be offered Thu, Oct 16, 9:30am-3:30pm at St Alice-Springfield and Fri, Oct 17, 9:30am-3:30pm at the Pastoral Center in Portland. The cost is $15 and includes lunch. This workshop is cosponsored by the Archdiocesan Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry and the Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education. For more info or a registration form, email youthministry@archdpdx.org.

9. NET dates available

A few dates are still available for the National Evangelization Team’s visit to our archdiocese this spring: April 22, April 23, April 27, April 28, & April 29. NET specializes in youth retreats and has a wonderful reputation. If you’re interested in NET leading your youth retreat, contact Michal Horace at the archdiocese at mhorace@archdpdx.org.

10. Theology On Tap

Metropolitan Catholic Fellowship (MCF) is again sponsoring Theology on Tap talks for young adults every Thursday in October at the Lucky Lab brewpub in SW Portland. Upcoming topics and speakers include: Oct 2, “Where There’s Prayer, There’s Fire”, by Fr. John Amsberry; Oct 9, “Krispy Kreme: Virtue or Vice”, by Fr. Todd Molinari; Oct 16, “Faith Into Action: Bridging the Gap Between Faith and Real Life”, by Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers; Oct 23, topic to be announced, by Fr. Ray Carey; and Oct 30, “Establishing Healthy Relationships”, by Sr. Barbara Kennedy. Talks start at 7pm, but arrive earlier to get some food & drink. For more information, visit www.mcfpdx.org.

11. GIRMs now available in Spanish

Spanish versions of the new General Instructions of the Roman Missal (GIRM) are now available and can be ordered through the Archdiocesan Office of Worship. Many parishes are in the planning stages of implementing changes in their liturgies to conform to the GIRM by Advent 2003. Copies are $10. Contact Gayle at gwarden@archdpdx.org.

12. Archdiocesan Catechetical Conference -- Featuring Young Adult Ministry training workshops ("Young Adults: Take ‘Em or Leave ‘Em”) and informal networking reception immediately following the conference.

The annual Archdiocesan Catechetical Conference is Oct 18, 2003 at Christ the King Church/La Salle High School in Milwaukie. Coordinators of Youth Ministry and Youth Ministers are especially invited to this excellent and affordable conference. We want to especially highlight two workshops. Please consider a two-session workshop entitled “Young Adults: Take ‘Em or Leave ‘Em” presented by Joan Weber. If you are involved in Young Adult Ministry and could not attend one of our Young Adult Ministry Training Days (see above), you should attend this 2½-hour workshop.  In addition, plan on attending an informal networking reception immediately following the Conference to meet other young adult ministry leadership and discuss topics of interest with our speaker, Joan Weber.  A second workshop that we think youth ministers will especially enjoy is a 2½-hour (two session) workshop entitled “Prayer & Liturgy” by keynoter Tom Tomaszek.  For more info, visit http://www.archdpdx.org/religious-education/fallconf/cover.
