Youth Ministry Update
Sept 18, 2003
_______________________________________________________________________
1. Pastoral Care Class - Ever felt unsure how to minister to a teen in crisis? Or, wondered how to develop preventative measures to protect your young people? Or, wondered if you’re in over your head and need to refer to a professional? “Fostering the Faith Growth of Adolescents through Pastoral Care” of the Youth Ministry Studies Program (YMSP) will help you answer these tough questions. The class is Oct 4-5 at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie. This is the only course that we can choose our instructor. Kevin O’Connor has taught this class many times and has always been well praised for his straightforward style. All are welcome, whether you’re planning on taking all eight YMSP classes or just this one. Please register soon! The cost is $140 plus optional books for an individual. Group rates are available for 2, 3, or 4 from the same parish. Email us at youthministry@archdpdx.org for more info or a flyer.
2. Archdiocesan Youth Conference – The annual Archdiocesan Youth Conference is set for Jan 30-Feb 1, 2004 at the Seaside Convention Center in Seaside. ADYC is a weekend festival featuring live music, dynamic multi-media presentations, powerful keynotes, and lots of fun! This year’s theme is “Jesus Revealed” based on Lk 4:21-30. The price is $45 for each youth or adult and includes a box lunch on Sat and late night snacks on Sat night. Note that this is a reduction in the ADYC fee’s from last year, but only one meal and a snack are included this year instead of four meals last year. The other meals are on your own. Lodging is extra. Housing information and registration materials will be available in October. For an ADYC advance flyer, email us at youthministry@archdpdx.org.
3. Young Adult Ministry Training Day – Offered twice in our archdiocese, “Making Your Parish More Young Adult Responsive” is a workshop for pastoral leaders such as Young Adult Ministers, Coordinators of Youth Ministry, priests, DRE’s, Pastoral Associates, etc. Joan Weber, a national expert in Catholic Young Adult Ministry will present the workshop that will be offered Thu, Oct 16, 9:30am-3:30pm at St Alice-Springfield and Fri, Oct 17, 9:30am-3:30pm at the Pastoral Center in Portland. The cost is $15 and includes lunch. This workshop is cosponsored by the Archdiocesan Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry and the Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education. For more info or a registration form, email youthministry@archdpdx.org.
4. NET available for retreats – Dates are available for the National Evangelization Team’s visit to our archdiocese April 17-May4, 2004. NET specializes in youth retreats and has a wonderful reputation. If you’re interested in NET leading your youth retreat, contact Michal Horace at the archdiocese at mhorace@archdpdx.org.
5. World Youth Day in Parishes and Priesthood Sunday – As we hope most of you know by now, Sunday, Oct 26, 2003 (the 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time) has been designated as World Youth Day in Parishes by the US Bishops. We also hope that you are planning some special ways to advocate for youth and to get them involved in your liturgies that weekend (we still have copies of the 2003 Youth Ministry Resource Manual in stock, which has concrete suggestions for celebrating WYD in your parishes and you can read this year’s message to youth from the Holy Father at http://www.vatican.va/gmg/documents/gmg_2003_en.html). The National Federation of Priests’ Councils has recently announced that they have designated Sunday Oct 26, 2003 as Priesthood Sunday because the Sunday readings call attention to priesthood. We’re a bit disappointed that the NFPC choose the same weekend as WYD, but because of the intrinsic link of youth advocacy and vocations, we encourage you to celebrate both and honor youth and priests together.
6. Nominate a Catholic Youth for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards – Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School principals wants to honor young volunteers in grades 5-12. Applications must be submitted by Oct 21, 2003, to a school principal or to the head of one of these officially designated local organizations: a Girl Scout council, county 4-H organization, Camp Fire USA council, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or member Volunteer Center of the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network. This is a great way for us to highlight the terrific volunteer work of individual youth and the emphasis that Catholic youth ministry places on community involvement. For more information and application forms, visit www.prudential.com/spirit.
7. Archdiocesan Catechetical Conference – The annual Archdiocesan Catechetical Conference is Oct 18, 2003 at Christ the King Church/La Salle High School in Milwaukie. Coordinators of Youth Ministry and Youth Ministers are especially invited to this excellent and affordable conference. We want to especially highlight two workshops. First, please consider a two-session workshop entitled “Young Adults: Take ‘Em or Leave ‘Em” presented by Joan Weber. If you are involved in Young Adult Ministry and could not attend one of our Young Adult Ministry Training Days (see above), you should attend this 2½-hour workshop. A second workshop that we think youth ministers will especially enjoy is a 2½-hour (two session) workshop entitled “Prayer & Liturgy” by keynoter Tom Tomaszek. For more info, visit http://www.archdpdx.org/religious-education/fallconf/cover.
8. Women Religious Vocation Retreat – A vocational discernment retreat for single Catholic women ages 16-45 will be held on Sat, Oct 18, 9:30am-3:00pm at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie. A free lunch is included. There is no charge, but advance reservations are required. To register, contact Mother Mary of the Angels, S.R. 503-236-4207 or Sister Marietta, OSB, 503-845-6141. Please pass this information onto eligible single women and continue to pray for vocation.
